Police and fire officials will have to come up with another way to replace three police cruisers and refurbish two ambulances after voters decided not to raise property taxes for a year to pay for the replacements.

The question failed by a mere 60 votes with 643 votes against and 583 for the debt exclusion (433 voters did not cast a vote for the question).

“A lot of folks I’ve talked to said they didn’t even see the question on the ballot,” Fire Chief Robert Heath said. Police Chief Joseph Rebello agreed with him.

Had the question passed, an additional $279,000 would have been assessed in real estate and personal property taxes. The average homeowner in Kingston would have paid an additional $55 on their tax bills for one year. The average home value is about $300,000.

Both chiefs say they will go back to the drawing board and the Capital Planning Committee. That committee and the Finance Committee made the decision to place the emergency services needs on the ballot instead of going to Town Meeting in June.
