As new law takes effect, most young drivers in New Jersey ignore red decals Press of Atlantic City

The majority of young New Jersey drivers are disregarding a new
law that makes it easier for law-enforcement agencies to check if
they are violating the terms of their driver’s licenses.
The law, which took effect at midnight, requires drivers younger
than 21 who hold probationary or provisional licenses to put
reflective red decals on both license plates of the cars they are
driving.
Officials with the state Motor Vehicle Commission, or MVC, said
that while about 300,000 young drivers need to use the decals, the
state has sold only about 37,000 pairs. Each pair costs $4, and
they should be removed when young drivers are not behind the
wheel.
At the same time, authorities are more than aware of the new
measure.
MVC spokesman Michael Horan said the commission has sent
law-enforcement agencies such as local police departments, State
Police and prosecutors’ offices notices reminding them of the
law.
“I’m sure law enforcement expects full compliance,” he said.
