Thousands of pounds paid out to drivers Swindon Advertiser

COUNCILS are being inundated with insurance claims for pothole-related damage to cars.

The figures come amid growing concern among residents about the state of Swindon and Wiltshire roads, which have suffered badly from severe winter weather.

And although Wiltshire Council has fared much worse than Swindon Council, both have seen a distinct number of claims.

Since December 1, 2009, Wiltshire Council has received 355 compensation claims relating to damage to vehicle tyres, axles and suspension, compared to 83 last year.

Out of those claims, which resulted from damage to vehicle’s tyres, axles and suspension, 108 have been successful, forcing the authority to pay out £14,348 so far.

Meanwhile, Swindon Council has suffered almost double the claims it did last year.

In 2009/10 the number of claims jumped from 40 to 72, 11 of which have been settled so far.

One pothole expert said the average cost to cars that hit potholes was £240, and the highest ever payout after pothole damage was £2,700.
