Beginning May 1st, a little red sticker has to be on the plates when drivers under 21 take the wheel.

The stickers have been on sale at MVC offices since mid-April.

The stickers have velcro on them so they can be removed if someone older drives the car. The state says one decal must be displayed on the upper left corner of the front license plate and one on the upper left corner of the rear license plate.

Police will use the stickers to determine whether teens are violating the state driving curfew and passenger restrictions. Young drivers who do not have the stickers on their plates risk a $100 fine.

The stickers cost $4 per pair.

According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, 61 percent of teenage passenger deaths in 2007 occurred in vehicles driven by another teenager. Twenty percent of all passenger deaths occurred when a teenager was driving.

New Jersey's decal law was spurred by the driving death of a 16-year-old honor student in Morris County, Kyleigh D'Alessio. She died in 2006 riding in a car driven by a teenager with a probationary license.
